For 13+ years I have managed, developed, and designed dozens sites serving hundreds of thousands of visitors built off sound design principles and strong development foundations. While much of my work is in WordPress and my niche has been in complete project management (being able to handle every step of a project) I have built several APIs and apps in Node and React as well.

Managing both people and systems are key to day-to-day development. I have worked as an internal Project Manager and as a contract developer. Even when working a developer, I handle timelines and deliverables for the overall projects.

The Find Your Wild microsite built out a portal to a vibrant and extensive park system in Hamilton Ohio. An early implementation of the WordPress full site editor still allowed easy updating of even the most dynamic content by taking standard blocks and arranging them seamlessly on the front end with efficient JS.

Self-hosting for everything from time tracking to uptime monitoring to coding assistants to twin local environments everything that can be set up, monitored, and updated locally. This has been crucial in not only lowering costs but also increasing potential since established subscription platforms tend update rarely and paywall newer features.
“AI” (Generative Content and Code)
My initial efforts with generative code on an RTX 2070 have expanded to daily use of Ollama and Opencode on an M4 Studio Max. There are many issues with generated code of course but there is value in having an agent update multiple variable instances, set up the layout of a theme folder, or explore coding avenues during development. That said, fixing and/or optimizing the code takes effort so balancing investment in learning and investment in automation.

Energy Infrastructure
Key to my work has been giving back but when moving to the suburbs I looked for ways to reduce our impact. Adding medium and low voltage electrical and simple residential plumbing to my self-taught skills I’ve been able to build a new energy, and comfort, infrastructure for a 1960s era home. I have just started in the clean energy space but our efforts so far have been successful, very cost-effective, and fun!
5.8 kW Grid-tied Solar Pergola
The first energy project came about from the likely complications of rooftop solar. With an East-West roof I looked for a way to maximize a small solar system. Now with a patio, lighting, and projector we have a full outdoor space that also provides around 40% of our heating, cooling, driving, and overall home power. (It was over 75% but then we removed oil and gas.)
2.4 kW Off-Grid Solar with 12 kWh Storage
Grid-tied storage is expensive and complicated (especially as DIY) but with an all-electric household, and the potential for outages in the winter, having some backup was non-negotiable. Fortunately 240v AC output all-in-one batteries had just entered the market and building them out with 3rd-party 48v DC extensions offer flexibility without dramatic cost. These are quickly paying off since we have shifted servers and freezers to them and it adds a few kWhs to the car a week.
Hybrid Water Heater and Backup Radiant Heat
When our oil tank rusted out legs first we were happy to see the massive, loud, expensive oil boiler system get chopped out. However, plumbers all but refused to install a hybrid water heater and no one offers a reasonably priced split air-to-water option as a drop in replacement. Fortunately air-to-water for DHW needs only standard plumbing and a backup 7 kW radiant heater offers the occasional cozy radiant heat, if somewhat inefficient, and keeps the radiant ready for a potential air-to-water addition.
3 EVSEs
Installing a 40 Amp EVSE during the grid-tied solar install was a no brainier. We got our first EV very soon after. I further installed an EVSE at our main destination in Delaware to remove the need to rely on public charging. From there I then added a Level 1 charger to our battery storage for a dump load on days when our servers don’t use up all the sun-hours from the off-grid system.
